Description

  • One reel to reel recording (28:40 minutes) Radio program about the story behind Foster's "Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair" and the similarly named talent competition held each February at the Stephen Foster Memorial and sponsored by the Florida Federation of Music Clubs. The competition was begun by Mrs. Leon Whitehurst of Brooksville, and president of the Stephen Foster Memorial Corporation of the Florida Federation of Music Clubs. In 1954, a musical scholarship was added to the competition. The second half of the program features recordings of contestant auditions from 1962 competition, including the winner, Rebecca Ann Jenkins. These programs were created in the early 1960s by the Stephen Foster Memorial to promote the park and its activities, as well as to educate the public about Stephen Foster and Florida folk music.
