Cape Romano-Ten Thousand Islands was designated an aquatic preserve in October 1969. The Rookery Bay and Cape Romano-Ten Thousand Islands Aquatic Preserves are located on the edge of the Everglades within the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.
