The house was built in 1838 by David Greenway Raney and was later the home of Judge George P. Raney, famed lawyer and Chief Justice of the Florida Surpreme Court. The residence was the site of the town's surrender to the Federals after the War between the States. Federal soldiers were quartered in the home during the reconstruction period. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
