Biographical Note
On April 20, 1885 a Russian named Peter A. Demens, owner of a sawmill located at Longwood, Florida, purchased a charter and franchise which had previously been issued to Messrs. Miller, Arnold, and Halland incorporated as the Orange Belt Railway. On August 12, 1893, the Sanford and St. Petersburg Railway Company was incorporated to operate and maintain the property of the Orange Belt Railway. Four of the best Sanford and St. Petersburg engines were retained for service on the narrow-gauge end of the line and ultimately found their way to the Atlantic Coast Line, where they were classified in the first 800 series.
