Vast areas of water and grass stretching for miles make up the major part of the Florida Everglades as seen from this aerial view. The Everglades run southward from Lake Okeechobee for 5,000 to 8,000 square miles. Countless varieties of tropical flowers and plant life are found in this the only truly tropical area of the United States. More than 230 varieties of birds, also deer, otters, raccoons, alligators, black bears, and panthers are found inhabiting the territory.
