Dr. John Gorrie (1803-1855) was an early pioneer in the invention of the artificial manufacture of ice, refrigeration, and air conditioning. He was granted the first U.S. Patent for mechanical refrigeration in 1851.
The 1.25 acre John Gorrie Museum State Park was given to the Florida Park on 15 April 1955 by the City of Apalachicola to celebrate the inventor of air conditioning.
