Accompanying note: "Chief 'Tomokie' shown being slain by Oleeta in defense of the 'golden cup'. Warriors below avenge chief's death by slaying Oleeta."
"Tomoka State Park, near Ormond Beach, Florida, is named for the river of the same name which empties into the Halifax River. It is both beautiful and different. In the park are facilities for picnicking with barbecue pits and swimming in the river. The park is both scenic and historical with archaeological interest. The Indian legend of Tomoka is portrayed in statuary, presented by Fred Dana, on a favorite Indian camp site."
In 1955, Ormond Beach artist Fred Dana March (1872-1961) created atop the site of the Oswald-Perpal plantation a 45' statue called "Legend of Tomokie." The following year, he added a reflecting pool. In 1957, there was a public ceremony for the artwork.
