Biographical Note
Patrick Houstoun, alternatively spelled Houston, (1837-1901) was a military leader, politician, and planter who resided in Tallahassee, Florida. Born in Savannah on September 30, 1837, his family moved to Tallahassee in 1838. He served as Captain of Kilcrease Light Artillery during the Civil War and fought in the Battle of Natural Bridge. He raised cattle and horses on his Lakeland Plantation. He also served in the Florida Senate, of which he was president in 1887. He was appointed Adjutant General in 1893, and served in that position until his death on May 6, 1901. He was buried in Old Episcopal Cemetery in downtown Tallahassee.
