Officially United States of America v. Karl Brandt, et al.
Justice Sebring was appointed by U.S. President Harry S. Truman to the U.S. Military War Crimes Tribunal in Nuremberg, Germany. Sebring requested, and was granted, a leave of absence for a period of up to one year. During his absence a number of Circuit Court Judges were called to the Supreme Court to sit in his place, render opinions and vote as a full member of the Court during the time they were called. This was before the creation of the District Courts of Appeal. They were given the title of "Associate Justice".
