General Note

  • Florida's first glider flight, Ormond Beach. The glider was designed by Israel Ludlow, a New York lawyer and amateur scientist. It was sent as an added attraction for the auto races. Pilot Charles K. Hamilton was towed aloft by auto bu the flight only went about 150 feet before a wing rib broke and a minor crash occured. The glider was repaired and several days later Hamilton tried another towed flight. This time he achieved a height of 250 feet, erratically climbing and diving down the beach before colliding with a flagpole just north of the Bretton Inn. Hamilton escaped with a bruised knee.
