  • The Board initiated a midwife licensing program in 1931 to reduce infant mortality and to promote maternal and child health.
  • Accompanying note: "Midwives photographs - with captions from J. Graves photo book"
  • "Has delivered his last wife of most of their 14 children. His last wife 'went in' October '32, and died one month after delivery. Baby died at 6 weeks. This 72 year old colored man was called in to deliver a white woman latter part of '32. An internal examination was made. Baby died supposedly of tetanus on the 8th day."
