In 1935, the state of Florida purchased 256 acres, which included the abandoned fort. It was the beginning of a program to acquire adjacent lands and began development of one of the first and finest state parks in Florida. The park was formally opened to the public in 1938. Covering 1,121 acres on the north end of Amelia Island, Florida's northern-most east coast barrier island, Fort Clinch State Park is separated from the state of Georgia by Cumberland Sound. The park has 8,400 feet of shoreline along the sound. The eastern side of the park is bounded by 4,000 feet of Atlantic coast,and the western side is bounded by an extensive estuarine marsh system.
