Long Key Fishing Camp was an international wintering spon from 1908 through August 1935 when the killer hurricane destroyed the railroad tracks, most of the dwellings on Lower Matecumbe and took the lives of more than 400 residents and veterans. The veterans had been assigned to work in the Keys after the infamous Bonus March in Washington D.C. the previous year.
