General Note
On March 7, 1914, the will of Mrs. F.A. Morrell bequeathed property on South Missouri Avenue to the city to provide a hospital to be known as Morrell Memorial. A bond issue on October 7, 1914, included an item for building and equipping the hospital. Plans drawn by A.J. Poteet were accepted on November 1, 1915. Contract for the building was let to E.C. Angell at $12,500 on December 14, 1915. The cornerstone was laid on February 24, 1916, and the hospital was open for service on August 11. This hospital served for ten years until the later Morrell Memorial was completed in 1926 on Lakeland Hills Boulevard. This 1926 building, enlarged many times, is known in 1984 as the Lakeland Regional Medical Center and had 30-odd listings in the telephone directory.
