Curtiss was a pioneer aviator and owner of the Curtiss-Bright Ranch Company, which worked at promoting and developing Hialeah, Miami Springs, and Opa-locka, Fla. Based on the medal's inscription, Curtiss received the award in 1913 for his achievements in "aerodromics."
The Langley Medal is issued by the Smithsonian Institution of Washington, D.C.
