General Note
The Palmettos, built in 1877 for S.U. Hammond (editor of the Putnam County Journal), consist of approximately 126 acres with almost a mile of waterfront on the St. Johns River. The manor house, with much intricate wood-lace work, sets on a large shell-midden mound with a commanding panoramic view of the river. The house, a two story recreation hall or bowling alley, a dock, a boathouse, a honeymoon cottage, a carriage house and other outbuildings are Victorian style architecture. The site dates back into prehistoric times as evidenced by the large Indian midden-shell mound that stretches 1,000 feet along the river bank.
Slides identified: 1. Main facade, facing river, 2. Honeymoon cottage, 3. Side view, 4. Side view, 5. Ferry, 6. Main facade, facing river, 7. Back of house + view of bowling alley, 8. Main facade as seen from river, 9. Ferry.
