General Note

The Lawrence Brown House (aka L.B. Brown House), completed in 1892, may be the only home built by a former enslaved person left in Florida standing as a living testimony to one person's triumph over adversity. It was later added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on January 4, 2001. Note 2nd Avenue was later changed to L.B. Brown Avenue.

Biographical Note

Lawrence Bernard Brown (September 12, 1856 - June 16, 1941) was a self-made businessman, community leader, and master carpenter. He was later designated a "Great Floridian 2000" in 1998. Every year the town of Bartow recognizes L.B. Brown's life and achievements at an annual "L.B. Brown Festival", usually held mid-February.
