Accompanying note: "Weeki Wachee Spring, Florida, where lovely live mermaids perform deep in crystal clear water. At no time during the show do they surface for air. It's the only show of its kind in the world, and the spectator sees it all from the underwater theatre."
The Weeki Wachee Springs attraction was created in 1947 by an ex-Navy frogman named Newton Perry. In 1959, ABC/Paramount purchased the attraction and between 1959 and 1961 built a new theater that could hold 500 people. It was widely advertised that the cost was over $1 million. Weeki Wachee Springs later became a state park on November 8, 2008.
