[Written across the original text] Confidential Dear Sir: I wrote to Gov Stearns a few days ago, but did not write to him my conclusions from information then and since received that there was a secret organization existing throughout the State, to carry this state at all hazzard for the Democracy, by initimidation, force, or by other means whatever. From what I learn Marion County was to go Democratic by all means. The Democracy here were so certain that their plans had been there carried out that they got up a jolification and fired rope guns, treated themselves to plenty of mean whiskey. That and many other circumstances which I will not put on paper, shows conclusively the prearranged plans to accomplish indirectly what they could not do directly. Strange things were done in this County. I am informed that irregularities existed at two precincts on the Halifax River. Considerable irregularity existed in Orange County, especially at Mellonville where Republicans voted, but their votes were not counted, which is now being sharply looked after by the County Committee.
