He became interested in Florida on a yachting trip in the early 1870s and purchased 20,000 acres from General Joseph Finnegan. Henry Sanford established the town of Sanford, the Sanford store, built a wharf on Lake Monroe to accommodate the St. Johns River steamers, built Sanford House hotel and established orange groves, first at Sanford then later at Belleair, three miles northwest.
He imported thousands of citrus trees of every known variety, put out nurseries and sold and gave away stock and buds whenever it would help to develop the citrus industry. General Sanford was at this time U.S. Minister to Belgium. He brought over a large colony of Swedes, who formed a powerful and useful labor supply.
