A member of the 95th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment Company G, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on February 22, 1865 for the capture of the flag of the 6th regiment, Florida Volunteers, at Brentwood Hills near Nashville, Tennessee on December 16, 1864.
