  • Accompanying note: During 1863 the few Confederate troops in Florida were so scattered that it seemed impossible for them to oppose a large invading party. The Federal government sent an expedition for the purpose of bringing Florida back into the Union to raise a regiment of white troops as well as Negro regiments.
