An historical marker, later erected in 1974, reads: "The Miami Woman's Club was founded in 1900, four years after the City of Miami was incorporated, as the Married Ladies' Afternoon Club. It was affiliated with the Florida Federation of Women's Clubs in 1903, the General Federation of Women's Clubs in 1905, and the Dade County Federation of Women's Clubs in 1916. Henry M. Flagler was the Club's benefactor. The Miami Woman's Club is credited with the founding of the Public Library System of Miami-Dade County. The Club's history parallels that of the City of Miami. The members exemplify the motto, 'Not for Ourselves Alone'. This 'Spanish Renaissance' structure was dedicated as 'The Miami Woman's Club and Flagler Memorial Library' in 1926 and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1974."
