General Note
Built before 1860 on the SE corner of the Courthouse Square, the Monticello Hotel was owned by William M. Humphrey, until it was purchased by Mrs. Mary A. Madden about 1863, and renamed The Madden House. In 1885-86 it was renovated and operated by Daniel L. and Mary C. Oakley, until it was destroyed by fire in the 1890s.
