The ditcher was built by the Buckeye Traction Ditcher Company in Findlay, Ohio for the John Quinn company of Miami. Rear view shows wheel as it is digging a ditch. The conveyor is hanging from the boom. Behind the wheel is a plow or scraper to form a slope sided ditch out of the trench. The ditched earth went into buckets on a wheel that dumped onto a conveyor for removal.
The Everglades Drainage District was established in 1913 (Ch. 6456, 1913 Laws) for the purpose of draining and reclaiming lands located near the Everglades for agricultural and sanitary purposes. To carry out this mandate, a system of canals, drains, levees, dikes, dams, locks and reservoirs were constructed.
