General Note
The sluiceway is used to control waters pouring from east out of Lake Okeechobee and down the Caloosahatchee River.
In 1949 the Florida Legislature created the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control District, the predecessor to the South Florida Water Management District, and consolidated the Everglades Drainage District and the Okeechobee Flood Control District under this.
