Description

Statement by Governor LeRoy Collins regarding segregation in Florida. Governor Collins says the "customs and traditions" of segregation are deeply rooted in Southern society and "hearts and minds" cannot be coerced to support integration or segregation through Supreme Court orders or the tactics of the Ku Klux Klan. Collins declares that he will continue to enforce segregation in accordance with Florida law until he is told by the Florida Supreme Court that it is his duty to do otherwise.
