The Gandy Bridge was opened in 1924. Before it was built travelers had to make a 40-mile circuit from Tampa to get to the Peninsula of Pinellas County where St. Petersburg is located.
Accompanying note "This is one of the longest bridges in the world extending over 6 miles across Old Tampa Bay, connecting St. Petersburg and the lower peninsula with Tampa. Gandy Bridge creates a saving of over 30 miles in distance from Tampa to St. Petersburg."
