Opened January 1, 1926 as the Hotel Rolyat (Taylor spelled backwards) named for I.M. Jack Taylor. It later served as the Florida Military Academy (1932-1951) and afterwards as the Stetson University College of Law.
Accompanying note: "Noted architects have pronounced the Rolyat one of the most beautiful edifices in America; cost $2,000,000; constructed of material from ancient castles and monasteries, imported from Spain. Built around a medieval court, its towers and turrets form a picturesque silhouette against the turquois waters of Boca Ciega Bay. In the court is a historic 'wishing well' from ancient Spain, where tourists toss coins in the water, expressing a wish, which, legend says, shall be granted."
