- Racecar driver who held the 1 mile speed record at Daytona for a few months in 1928. He again held the record for the mile and the kilometer in 1931. In 1932 he held titles to the 1 mile and kilometer, 5 mile and kilometer and the 10 mile records. In 1933 he held the 1 mile and kilometer, and 5 mile records. In March of 1935 he set a new world record of 276.82 mph. In Utah he achieved the first official time over 300 mph at 301.13 in September 1935. He became the second man to hold the land and water speed records simultaneously.
