Physical Description
General Note
Built in 1928 as one of the last private cars and one of a group of six named for famous explorers. In 1942 it was withdrawn from general service and returned to Pullman's Calumet shops to be rebuilt as presidential car. It was the only car owned by the United States and became a traveling home of Roosevelt, Truman and Eisenhower. Surplussed in 1958 and given to the Florida Development Commission who gave it to the University of Miami. Displayed by Gold Coast Railroad and when Gold Coast Railroad moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1966 ownership of the car was transferred to Gold Coast Railroad. The museum returned to Miami when Fort Lauderdale needed the museum land to build I-595.
This is the only Pullman car custom built for the exclusive use of the United States President in the 20th century. It was the only passenger railcar ever designated a "National Historic Landmark" by the United States government when the honor was bestowed in February 1985.
