General Note
Dead Lakes were created naturally when the Apalachicola River blocked the Chipola River downstream. This caused the water level to rise in the river swamp and the trees were gradually killed. The dead trees standing in the water suggested 'Dead Lakes'. Man made dams were later constructed to maintain a high water level.
