Accompanying note: "Commanding the navy yard at Pensacola and the approaches to Fort Pickens."
Fort Pickens occupied the western tip of Santa Rosa Island commanding the eastern entrance to Pensacola Harbor. Completed in 1834, the fort is pentagonal in shape, with a bastion at each of the five corners. In the fort are cells in which Geronimo, the Apache chief, and his followers were imprisoned in 1886. Fort Pickens later became a part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore in 1971.
