The Grove furnished the locale for the novel "The Tallahassee Girl" written by Maurice Thompson in 1881.
Note reads, "The mansion in the grove Tallahassee, Florida Home of the Tallahassee Girl. Splendidly constructed of hand-hewn timber and bricks made by slaves, this old colonial home was built by Richard Keith Call for his lovely bride, Mary Kirkman of Nashville, Tennessee. Through the lifetime of its builder who in 1835 became Governor of that Florida which he had helped General Andrew Jackson win for these United States, there echoed through the stately halls and rooms the dainty footfalls of lovely women who, with courtly men, danced to the strains of violin, harp and flute; or the heavier tread of those sturdy men who gathered about the hospitable hearth as they labored to build the Florida of their dreams. Those days are gone. The doors now open to you if you would avail yourself of the service that it offers where good food, tastily prepared, is daily served. You are invited to visit the mansion in the grove and the old south coffee shop. Teas or regular meals at popular rates. Dining room reservations for luncheon or dinner parties. Large rooms with baths $1.50-$2.50 Mrs. Thomas H. Bond, Mgr."
Accompanying note on front: "Former home of Governor Call built in 1825".
