Accompanying note: "Prosperity was continuing and optimism was high when the Hotel Kelley was started in Gainesville in 1925. However, the building was left unfinished when bust overtook the boom, until the state took over the structure and finished it in the late 20's. The hotel was started by McGee Kelley, a South Florida land and development promoter, as a prestige and high class hotel for Gainesville. After construction reached the 10th story, Kelley stopped building. Eventually, the City of Gainesville, Alachua County and the Seagle family (for whom the present structure is named) raised funds to buy the unfinished structure. It was completed by the State, and named the Seagle Building. The Florida State Museum, part of the University of Florida, land has been located here, as are other UF functions. The building was the highest structure in downtown Gainesville when finished, and remains so today (1967) except for a Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company microwave tower."
