Copy of an old 1880s photo.
Alachua County's first courthouse in Gainesville was built in 1854 at a cost of $5000. The county seat, previously located at Newnansville and Spring Grove, was moved to Gainesville in 1854. The building was torn down in 1884 when a new courthouse was built. The courthouse in the early years of Gainesville's existence served not only for functions of government, but also as a social and religious center. On Sundays the court rooms were used for church gatherings. First meetings of the Gainesville city government, after its incorporation in 1869, were also held in this old frame building.
