Signal towers like this one at Jacksonville were used by Union forces in East Florida during the War Between the States. This structure was erected in what then was called the Public Square and now is known as Hemming Park. Similar in purpose to the "line of sight" towers used nowadays by telephone companies, these enabled Federal units to communicate with each other and with the offshore fleet. The enclosed portion at the top of the tower was reinforced to protect the signalmen against Confederate snipers.
