General Note
"Hamilton McPhaul served in the Confederate Army, enlisting on April 19, 1862 at Chattahoochee, Florida as a private in Company 'A' - 6th Florida Regiment. At the battle of Bentonville, North Carolina, on March 19, 1865, he was struck by a mini ball on his right leg, which was later amputated above the knee. He taught in the first public schools in Gadsden County after the war, and was Justice of the Peace in 1878. He gave his occupation on the 1880 census as 'getting lumber for the railroad,' and as a farmer and post office worker' in 1885; he was the officials enumerator of the 1885 census of Gadsden County."
