General Note
Accompanying note: "Dorothy Nash Tookes (center, wearing glasses shaking hands) was a founder and first principal of Tallahassee's Bond Elementary School in 1935. She also turned her home, 412 W. Virginia St., into one of the city's few hotels for blacks during segregation. From 1948 to the mid-1980s, numerous famous black visitors to Tallahassee stayed at the Tookes Hotel, including poet James Baldwin and singer Lou Rawls. Tookes died in 1988; her home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places [in 2001 as the Tookes House]."
