- Portrait of Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith.
- Born on May 16, 1824. A native of St. Augustine, who at Galveston on June 2, 1865 surrendered the last confederate force. A West Point graduate, he had in 8 battles of the Mexican War, and been wounded in Indian fighting before resigning to enter the Confederate service in 1861. He commanded the Transmississippi Department, consisting of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Indian territory so independently that it was called "Kirby Smithdom." Died on March 28, 1893.
