General Note
The privately owned Rainbow Springs attraction opened in the 1930s. Before the building of the attraction, the Rainbow River was known at different times as Wekiwa Creek or Blue Run. In 1972, the U.S. Department of the Interior designated Rainbow River as a National Natural Landmark. The Rainbow Springs attraction later closed in the mid-1970s, but reopened as a state park in the mid-1990s.
Note the boats read, "To the Underwater Wonderland".
Biographical Note
Joseph Janney Steinmetz was a world-renowned commercial photographer whose images appeared in such publications as the Saturday Evening Post, Life, Look, Time, Holiday, Collier's, and Town & Country. His work has been referred to as "an American social history," which documented diverse scenes of American life from affluent northeasterners to middle-class Floridians. Steinmetz moved from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Sarasota, Florida in 1941.
