General Note/Comment

  • Six reel to reel recordings. Ella Mae Wilson is Williams's daughter. She was born in 1921 in Jonesville, and sang as a gospel quartet with her sisters and mother at Baptist churches in Alachua county. Williams was also born in Jonesville, in 1887. As a teen, he played guitar for the phosphate camps, fish fries, and neighboring farms -- usually at dances. These are field recordings from the Florida Record Project. That project, along with fieldwork for the North Florida Project, resulted in the two-album recording, Drop On Down in Florida. See also a second interview, and music performance, by Williams (and Ella Mae Wilson) on reels T78-328 and T78-329, in S 1576, also recorded by Devane and Bulger. A third interview can be found on C77-33 and C77-34, in S 1576, box 1.
