Biographical Note
The provence of West Florida or the Republic of West Florida, which existed from September 23, 1810, until December 6, 1810, in the territory between the Pearl and Mississippi Rivers taken from Spain by American revolters. While "West Florida" was the name given the area, it should be remembered that its eastern most boundary was 140 miles west of the present Florida. The memory of the short-lived State of West Florida is preserved today in every allusion to the "Florida Parishes" of Louisiana.
