General Note
In 1898, the Schlemmer Rooming House was built on the foundation of the Schlemmer Hotel which had been destroyed by a tidal wave and fire caused by the 1896 hurricane. On May 20, 1963, the Schlemmer Rooming House was purchased by the city of Cedar Key. The rooming house served as the headquarters for the Cedar Key Volunteer Fire Department until May of 2003 when renovation of the building for use as a library was begun.
