Accompanying note: "This unpleasant but instructive photograph shows leg of Gene Coppedge, buying agent for Ross Allen's Reptile Institute, while he was receiving treatment for snakebite inflicted by a Florida diamond back rattlesnake. Gene had picked up the snake with his hook and was putting it in box when it fell to the ground close to his foot and struck very high, just above his anke-proof boot. One fang struck top of boot and the other went half inch into flesh just below the knee. Fortunately Gene knew what to do and had the nerve to do it. He gave himself immediate first aid by [torn] cuts and applying suction around the bite and above the knee. He continued suction during wild ride to hospital, where Mr. Allen and doctors took over treatment. Picture shows 15 suction cups above knee, drawing the poison out through cross incisions. Other cross incisions, previously cupped, may be seen. Note hospital-type rubber tourniquet applied not too tightly as a restricting band (left) to confine the venom to the surface blood vessels below that point. Gene also received injections of antivenin and blood transfusions, was especially weak the third day but fully recovered in two weeks.
