Three Friends was built: 1895 at Jacksonville. Rig: Screw. Length: 112. Width: 24. Gross Tonnage: 157. Owner: Captain Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, then Sheriff of Duval County, a captain and pilot on Saint Johns.
Dorcas Beckley, later Drake, daughter of Frank C. Beckley and Josephine Broward Beckley was granddaughter of Governor Broward. She was a Justice of the Peace in Jacksonville for many years.
It was intended as a towing or wrecking tug in the Keys, but insurrection against Spanish rule in Cuba sent her filibustering (conveying munitions of war to the rebels). Originally rigged with two heavy duty masts, and an auxillary sail could be rigged on the foremast. Lighter masts replaced later Furnaces converted to fuel oil after WWI. Despite efforts to preserve her she sank off Bever St. wharf in Jacksonville and was abandoned 1950.
