Albert Gilchrist worked as a civil engineer, real estate agent and citrus grower in Punta Gorda. He was a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 1893 to 1905, and was speaker of the House in 1905. Subsequently, he became the governor of Florida from 1909 to 1913.
