Biographical Note
On April 29, 1814 the United States sloop "Peacock", commanded by Captain Lewis Warrington, sighted the British sloop "Epervier",commanded by Captain R. W. Wales, escorting a convoy of two merchantmen near Cape Canaveral. Captain Warrington fired his starboard cannons as he passed Epervier, then ordered his men to load with barshot (bundles of scrap iron) in order to cripple the British ship aloft. The main mast and the main boom of Epervier were shot away. Captain Wales, fearing that his ship was about to fall to the Americans, called for his men to board the Peacock, but seeing that his crew were rather disenclined for adventure, Wales hauled down his flag in surrender.
