Photographer Fred W. Bruce was born on May 10, 1856. From 1881-1883 he was a draftsman for Boston, Concord & Montreal R.R. in Motive Power Department. 1883 he began practice of engineering and surveying in Belknap Co., N.H.; 1884 in St. Augustine, Fla., engaged in land surveying, later in engineering, and was appointed City Engineer. Accepted a position with H.M. Flagler at the beginning of his East Coast Hotel construction. In February 1886 he was appointed Inspector of Dredging at Apalachicola and Carabelle Rivers under the U.S. Engineer Corps. In November 1886 Bruce was appointed Assistant Engineer engaged in the restoration and repair of Fort Marion. From February 1889 until December 1897 he was the Superintendent in charge of bar and jetty work at the mouth of the St. Johns River. He was transferred to Key West on fortification work in progress. April 1898 to September 1899 he was Assistant Engineer under Capt. C.H. McKinstry, after which he was employed on surveys in the U.S. Engineers office at St. Augustine, Florida.
