One of the eleven children of Samantha and Ellis McGhee. He would graduate from FAMU and teach in the Alachua County Public schools. Rayfield Sr. later received his Doctorate in Education (D.Ed) from the University of Florida in 1973. He married and had two sons, Rayfield Jr. and Vincent who both later became attorneys.
